York State's Farmworkers Need Adequate Field Sanitation
Problem:
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health) Field Sanitation regulations
require field toilets and hand-washing facilities only for farm
operations employing 11 or more workers in the field.
Background:
The use of toilets and hand-washing prevents the spread of
communicable diseases among workers, food-handlers and consumers.
Without adequate field sanitation, many farmworkers on small farms
suffer other health problems, and they lack the privacy that other
workers take for granted.
Impact:
With adequate field sanitation, farmworkers and consumers would be
protected from preventable infections and other diseases. The health and
dignity of farmworkers would be respected, and the safety of our food
supply would be enhanced, at a negligible cost.
