New York State's Farmworkers Need a Day of Rest

Problem:
New York State labor law does not grant farmworkers the right to 24 consecutive hours of rest within a calendar week.

Background:
Most other workers can take a day off on a weekend, farmworkers are sometimes required to work seven days a week. While farmworkers sometimes want to work straight through a short harvesting season for the income it brings, they also need time to rest and recover from strenuous work, and to attend to family needs. A day of rest, if requested by farmworkers, should be granted them.

Impact:
A day of rest would grant farmworkers the dignity accorded other workers. It would help reduce workplace accidents and injury, strengthen family life, and allow workers more time to participate in our communities.
