The Second Ten Years

Problems of communication went well beyond the fact that the Haitians and their employers spoke different languages. Haitians had different perceptions of work. Haitians were hard workers and used to manual labor but a grower remembers having "a hard time lining them up." Instead of picking potatoes in orderly lines and stacking the bags along the furrows, the Haitians would scatter all over the field to pick as many potatoes as possible.
