| Monica
García, a young
Latina farmworker, made this panoramic photo montage of the farm in
Steuben County where her family worked, harvesting onions.
Monica's family traveled the migrant stream from the Texas-Mexico border to New York. She once dreamed of continuing with school, even someday becoming a doctor. Instead, Monica married a farmworker in 1994 and is now a mother. She lives in Texas and works seasonally in a fish packing plant. |

Discussion Questions From Constancia's Choice Martin: I dropped out of school, sure. But I had a good reason. I had to take care of my family. But you, Brian, you just quit when things weren't going your way. Migrant farmworker youth have one of the highest dropout rates in the nation. Why do many migrant students often perceive dropping out of school as the only alternative available to them? What can be done to encourage migrant students to complete high school? Constancia: I'm not going with you, Brian. I make up my own mind. I love you. But I want more. What has made "Constancia's Choice"? What other choices could she have made? What are some of the choices Constancia will make in the future? What kind of life do you think Constancia will be living (experiencing) ten years from now? |
