Publications

Following is a listing of publications that have been developed by the Geneseo Migrant Center.
Living in America Curriculum – The FACES project (Foundations for Advancement through Civics Education Services) has developed a curriculum, Living in America, tailored to the needs, interests and language proficiency of beginning-level adult English Language Learners (ELLs).  The curriculum, consisting of thirty (30) instructional packets, was developed primarily for migrant farmworkers, but is designed to address the needs of all ELLs who have very limited literacy and oral skills.  The curriculum provides the framework for successful learning, with concise, easy-to-follow directions and a selection of topics that are relevant to the situations and tasks encountered by newly arrived adults.  Civics-based lessons, paired with life skill lessons, provide learners with an awareness of the principles and laws that are part of life in the United States.  The curriculum developers coined the term “social civics” to account for situations where a particular behavior is inappropriate, but not illegal.  The two-lesson packets are non-sequential with each lesson providing approximately 120 – 180 minutes of instruction.  The four to six hours of instruction per packet may be divided flexibly to meet the learner’s needs and time requirements.
Family Literacy Guided Lessons – A series of lessons based on forty-eight (48) titles of children’s literature provides activities incorporating the EVEN START core components (Early Childhood Education, Parenting Education, Adult Education and Parents and Children Interacting Together).  The lessons are based on scientifically developed reading research, provide language and literacy connections, and are correlated with state learning standards and the PLS4 sub-scales.  A unique component is the inclusion of script for the educator’s voice.
Bilingual Clip SheetsLimited English proficiency profoundly hinders survival skills on many levels including awareness of and competing for adequate paying jobs, securing health and other services, finding housing, improving living standards and communicating in daily life.  To address this need, the Center developed a series of bilingual “Clip Sheets.” The information included on the sheets has been updated in a new series of fifty (50) bilingual Clip Sheets that are now available for dissemination.  The sheets include the following topical areas:  Careers, Opportunities, Health, Looking for a Job and Survival Skills. Pocket Prompts – This handy, pocket-sized reference tool was developed to assist EVEN START educators in offering English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instruction.  The suggestions and drills, by no means new or innovative, are compiled into one document to aid an instructor in incorporating sound ESOL techniques into instructional lessons.
